Revolving Cat Scratching Post

Video tower is a new idea it is a Vertical cat scratching post that turns.  It is made out of completely recycled materials.  The carpeting is scraps from carpet dealers or searching their dumpsters.  The rest is reels from the local cable company that they throw out.  I’m sure they would be glad you are helping them put less trash in your dumpster.  The only cost would be Carpet tacks or staples for a air stapler.

Material list: 2 pieces of carpet about 22″ in diameter, I piece 19 3/4″ x 12″ this will cover the drum, two pieces to cover the ends you could use scrap pieces of linoleum also for the sides, 1 big core (the original one), 1 smaller core.  To make drum turn I cut two wooden bearings from a scrap reel.

Assembly: The way i did it: cut the 2 ends so you have a flat part to sit on the bottom and support the top (about 1 1/2 ” from each end), line them up so the original bolts will go through from side to side.  Use a smaller core to fasten the two ends together.  The big original core has to be about 1″ smaller than the smaller inside core.  I place the assembled sides on the bottom and mark the lines on both sides.  Then use a router and place a 1/8″ slot where both marks are – this will be repeated for the top.  Now you have two slots drill 2 pilot holes in each of them (repeat on top).

A smaller core is fastened first with the three original bolts from the both reels with the outer drum bigger also placed over the inner drum. Then you tighten them and you have your sides ready to fasten to the top & bottom. smaller core fastens the two.

I am retired after working as an industrial mechanic for most of my work career. I am married have had animals friends almost my whole life. This project that I have taken on has given me more satisfaction than my whole work career. So far over 600 beds and 60 cat bunks or towers have been made and donated to various shelters. Some new items were dog bunk beds and cat hammocks. I sleep at night knowing that in a small way we have made a difference in the life of the animals who have received our beds. We have sent beds to Nebraska, Texas, State of Washington and New Jersey. We have helped Eagle Scouts in their projects and in turn they have helped us.
